Approaching the Summer Months with a Plan
Note: This article was written by Chargers Strength & Conditioning Coach, Evan Jurjevic.
School is out, high school baseball state playoffs are wrapping up, and warm weather is finally here. At last, the highly anticipated summer break! Summer can be a hectic time with possible work, games, workouts, friends, vacations, chores, girlfriends, etc.
Summer break shouldn't be a "break" but rather viewed as an "opportunity." The way players approach the "break" can have a dramatic effect on their development as a player. The decisions made over the next few months directly correlates to the player and person you want to become. The summer months is a great opportunity to improve overall strength, speed, fine tune baseball skills and improve time management skills. Players will either formulate a plan and dedicate their time and improve, or take a step back while others get better.
Summer can definitely be challenging to manage from a time aspect. What I want to do with this post is assist players with how to plan out and properly manage their time in order to have a successful and enjoyable summer.
1. Write it Down
Get a calendar and write down weekly and monthly plans. Include work, vacations, classes, games etc. After you complete this task, you will be able to plan days to workout (3-5 days) and improve baseball skills (hopefully, something every day).
2. Make Short Term and Long Term Goals
These goals need to be specific and obtainable. Place these goals on the mirror you look at everyday. Seeing these goals daily is a consistent reminder that might make all the difference in reaching them.
3. Create a Routine
Try to go to bed and wake up at a reasonable time. This will give you more time through the day to mark off tasks that were listed on the calendar.
4. Diet and nutrition
The body can't change and or recover if you don't feed it properly.
5. Sleep
Sleep is a crucial aspect of recovery. 8 hours is recommended. Do not get in a habit of sleeping 10, 12, or 14 hours because during school it won't happen. Prepare your body for the season. Naps are great! Take a short 20 to 30 min nap if you feel exhausted from prior events from the day.
6. Make Sure to Enjoy Time with Family and Friends
If you are able to get your workouts out of the way early in the morning you have the entire rest of the day to enjoy yourself. Prioritize tasks each day each week each month and you will have a greater opportunity for success.
Having a plan and setting goals is the best and most effective way to have a successful summer. Ultimately, it is up to you. Train well!
